The Core French program in Ontario is a mandatory French as a Second Language (FSL) initiative designed for students enrolled in English-language schools.

🎓 Secondary Level (Grades 9–12)
- Graduation Requirement: Students must complete at least one credit in French as a Second Language to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), typically achieved by taking Core French in Grade 9.
- Continued Learning: Students have the option to pursue additional Core French courses in Grades 10 through 12. Completing all four credits (Grades 9–12) may qualify students for a Certificate of Achievement in Core French.

- Start of Instruction: Core French instruction typically begins in Grade 4.
- Instructional Time: Students receive approximately 200 minutes of French instruction per week, totaling a minimum of 600 hours by the end of Grade 8.
- Curriculum Focus: The program emphasizes the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Instruction is delivered in French, utilizing authentic materials and real-life contexts to enhance language acquisition.
