In the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, French is offered as a part of the Language Acquisition group, which is mandatory for all students in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP).
IB French in Canada: Overview
Ages: 11β16 (Grades 6β10)
- Students learn French as a second language (also called French Language Acquisition).
- Courses are designed to develop communication skills in real-life situations.
- There are different phases (levels) from beginner to advanced.

Ages: 16β19 (Grades 11β12)
French is offered in two main courses:
a) French Ab Initio (beginner level)
1. For students with little to no previous experience in French.
2. Focus on everyday situations, like:
- Introducing yourself
- Talking about your family, school, hobbies, travel, etc.
3. Emphasis on communication, vocabulary, and cultural awareness.
b) French B (intermediate to advanced level)
- Cultural identity
- Social relationships

How We Teach IB French
Our approach to teaching IB French combines academic rigor with real-world language application. We focus not only on grammar but also on developing the practical communication skills students need to succeed in the IB exam and use French confidently in everyday life.
Hereβs what we do in class:
- Analyze IB-style texts: articles, interviews, letters, blog posts, and literary excerpts. Students learn to understand tone, subtext, and cultural context.
- Build speaking skills: through role plays, debates, and structured oral exam practice (individual oral).
- Practice writing different text types: from informal emails to analytical essays. Students master the required formats and structures used in IB assessments.
- Explore relevant themes: such as identity, global issues, and social relationships β at either SL or HL levels.
- Work in exam format: using past IB papers, marking criteria, and teacher feedback for every component (oral, writing, reading, listening).
